Mommy, May I go Trick or Treating?

When we first came to this country and saw people celebrating Halloween, we were amazed! We would not allow children to go out on Halloween nights because something did not seem right about that kind of celebration to us. People’s yards were decorated with scary objects such as caskets, scare crows, and other frightening creatures. The children and adults were dressed in all kinds of very eerie looking costumes as well. Of course there were some costumes that were more pleasing to the eyes; such as princesses, superman, cowboys, clowns and other cartoon characters.
Since our children insisted that we were boring and pleaded to us to let them go ‘Trick or Treating” (the very name gives me the creeps) with their friends and their parents, I gave in and let them experience the euphoria a couple of times, against my husband’s will. I figured I would allow them to go so they would have the experience, but we would continue to enforce that this holiday does not glorify God in any way and we do not desire to be a part of it.
I even handed out candies a few times, because our girls did not want others to think that their parents were mean and did not want to give other children candies. Ah; the things we do for our children. As the years went on, however, I literally withdrew from having anything to do with this holiday and our children just had to suck it up.
Our thirtheen year old son who has never gone 'Trick or Treating asked me if he could go this year. I asked him why? He said just go with his friends. Well, when he was leaving home for school this morning, he said: "Everybody is going to be dressed up in costume today at school." I asked him, did you want to "dress up?" He said, "No." I'm glad that some of the things that seriously matter to girls, do not matter to boys.
It is insane that some people know that there is nothing good about celebrating this holiday, but they continue to do it year after year. For example, read this quote that I took from article that was written about Halloween: “It couldn’t be a way to live all year, but it’s freeing, for one day, to wrap your arms around all things wrong, awful and scary,” said Lesley Pratt Bannatyne, Halloween expert and author of “Halloween Nation: Behind the Scenes of America’s Fright Night.” “There’s something really attractive about it. We’re not perfect people. We’re tempted. It’s exciting to do something we’ve never done before.”
“During the past two decades, Halloween has exploded into one of the most celebrated holidays of the calendar year and has created a kind of community of worshippers who come together during October and make frights come to life.” Gloucester County Times, October 30, 2011.
Too many Christians are wrapped up in this holiday. To our surprise, a few christians told us two years ago when we celebrated our 25th year Anniversary, that they could not attend the anniversary party, because they had too much at stake to miss out on their Halloween celebration.
In my opinion and in my research findings, Halloween is nothing but a commercialized, holiday with pagan origins that Christians should have on part in or attachment to. I have searched the scriptures to see if the word Halloween is mentioned in it and I could not find it even once.
What I found, however, were scriptures that give clear instructions on what Christians should do to avoid falling into the trap of paganism. For instance:
Luke 4:8:  Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. Read also 1 Kings 18:21; Matthew. 6:24
Read these scripture and learn about the dangers of witchcraft and occultism: Exodus 22:18 and Leviticus 19:31; 20:6, 27, Deuteronomy 18, Acts 8:9-24, Galatians 5:20; Revelation 22:15.
It is clear to me from the statement above that was excerpted from the Gloucester County, that Halloween is a pagan holiday and from the scriptures mentioned above that Christians should not be involved with Halloween.  Yes, I know we all have free choice, but just in case you did not know... I, myself did not at one time. I hope you find this article beneficial..
